Music Publishing- the AK Way!

          Today, I will discuss a couple of ways in which Alicia Keys and her team are utilizing music publishing in effort to promote her album.  As we all know, “Girl on Fire” has definitely put Keys back on the map post marriage, pregnancy and childbirth.  It was a strong way to enter the music industry by storm.  She chose first utilize heavy online social media updates.  For example, constantly posting videos from the studio, and pictures during rehearsal was a way to keep the fans and potential fans on the edge of their seats in anticipation.  She came out with a viral video for 'New Day', then a “lyric” video, and then finally, an Official video.  These videos were published to allow the song to circulate while the music video was being scheduled for shooting. It allowed time for even the music to “grow” on people, if needed, by the time the official music video was released. Check out the links to the videos below.
            Next, do you remember seeing Alicia Keys sing at the Superbowl?  The next goal was to be as visible as possible for as many major events THIS year. She made an appearance, even if she is not what some would have thought to be the first choice to sing the National Anthem at such an event.  Regardless, her team successfully booked her for the gig.  Next on the agenda for Alicia was to sing on the GRAMMYs stage.  This was a big event for her as well.  To allow her new brand to be heard in front of other Industry greats, not just fans.

Most recently, tonight she sang at the NBA All-Star game.  She is keeping her appearances regular and also stimulating the buzz consistency.  All being said, she is promoting her brand, her new album, “Girl on Fire”, and a Brand New Me [Alicia], as a song on her album says.

She was also sporting a new Reebok creation, with Keys' creative assistance, called the AKW’s, which are not yet set to be released. So, not only is she promoting herself/brand, but also a product to affiliate herself with.  This keeps her name on the market for more potential sales, notoriety, fashion sense, and brand significance.  These are three points that Alicia used to publish herself in the recent months.

So, to recap, the three publishing tactics currently being utilized is:

  1. Use online social media HEAVILY to engage audience.
  2. Be as visible as possible at major events.
  3. Establish a product to affiliate yourself with.
